Cannes, France

We continued our time in Southern France and enjoyed more of the slow, good life in Cannes (pronounced "can").

Our first day, we spent soaking up the sun-as much as two incredibly pale people can.

Quacker Jack enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine.

Lunch on the beach

We did take a dip in the sea and it was a little chillier than we liked.  We are very spoiled to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico!

A street view in Cannes

The clock tower is  lit up to match the tricolor flag!

A touching memorial to soldiers from World War II

This street heads up into the old town of Cannes.  We enjoyed strolling around the tiny little winding streets one day.

Here are some of the tiny little winding streets:

J liked this door knocker.

He also liked this little motorcycle.

Olive trees take a really long time to grow.  These little guys (see J's foot at the bottom for size comparison) are 3 years old.

We stopped to enjoy a little caffeine pick-me-up.  (The bill was not 20 Euros!)

I'm not sure you can see it well-just past the Casino-we saw an 18 wheeler drive by with a load of serious sports cars.

Seafood for supper-both dishes of tuna were tasty, but mine was the most delicious.  Tuna tartare and the best french fries I have ever eaten in my life!

We saw a few fancy boats.

We took a ferry ride over to Île Saint-Honorat (island) - where monks live, and have lived, for the past 15 or 16 centuries.

Cannes as we are headed to the island

Just a pretty photo J took while we were waiting for our lunch on the island:

Goat cheese salad and ...

More fish (Mediterranean seabass)!

Here are some pictures as we walked around the island after lunch:

This fortified chapel sits outside the walls of the abbey.  Some rooms appeared to be used occasionally for meetings, maybe, but since there's no roof on the building any longer, I can't imagine it is used frequently for much of anything.

The entrance to the abbey

J climbed these narrow stairs to the top of the fortified chapel.  I stayed downstairs and listened to a French tour guide talk to a school group.  It would have been nice if I understood what he was saying...the kids seemed pretty interested.

Here's my little Adventure Sailor in his Tilley hat.

We arrived at the ferry dock in time to catch the 5 o'clock boat, but since all the field trip groups boarded that ferry, we decided to return to the restaurant on the island and wait for the last ferry of the day at 6.  It was a very relaxing environment.

We saw this guy on our walk earlier.  Actually, I'm not sure if it's exactly the same bird we saw, but he returned to the restaurant quite a few times while we were waiting for the next ferry.

This is our ferry boat.
Our stay in Cannes was very relaxing.  I'm sure during the film festival, things are flashier and much more fast paced, but for us, it was a nice introduction to the Mediterranean.

  2. I noticed a LOT of red lipstick since we got here, and I finally caved to it...when in Rome and whatnot. Except, now in Italy, I've noticed not as many red lips. Beauty is so confusing! :-)
