Pompeii? Pompei?

In Italy, Pompeii is spelled with one i on the end.

Here are some photos of our day trip to Pompeii Pompei from Salerno:

On our hike into the city-that's Mount Vesuvius in the background.
Of course, Quacker Jack has his photo taken, too.

Vesuvius again in the background
We saw a sundial and J was very impressed with it and his watch's accuracy.

We learned that the columns in many Roman cities were not solid marble, but covered with a facade of marble.  Pretty smart.

Beautiful weather in Pompei.

I wasn't sure about including the photos below, but decided it is part of the history there.  These are three of the casts archaeologists made during excavations at Pompei.

We learned that many Romans did not cook for themselves at home.  There were many of these "fast food stands" throughout the city.

This is in the foyer of a larger home in the city.  The words below translate to "Beware of the Dog".
"Can I take your order?"

This is a sign at a street corner indicating you are in a pedestrian only zone.
Can you see the wheel tracks in the stone?

It is amazing how well-preserved this frescoes is.

The House of the Fawn was largest home in Pompei and took up a whole city block.  This is just inside the front entrance of the home.

This fresco is not inside the House of the Fawn, but it is another well-preserved area.  Except for that perfectly cut square out of the middle...we decided an artifact hunter might have made his own souvenir out of this wall.

These pictures might be easier for you to see the wheel tracks:

We highly recommend getting to Pompei if you are in Italy.  It was well worth the trip.
