Sound of Music bike tour of Salzburg, Austria

I found this amazing bike tour before we made it to Salzburg, emailed them, and found out we had spots on the Thursday morning tour.  I was beside myself.

First stop, on a bridge overlooking the Salzach River that flows through Salzburg.  What a pretty day for a bike tour!

Then on to the movie sites.  This is outside the theater the family von Trapp sings in at the very end of the movie.  It is not open during the day, so we had to settle on reenacting the children's rehearsal of "Edelweiss" outside the theater instead.

Maybe we were all shy at first...

But, just give me a minute and I'm ready for my close up.

This is Residence Square - very important to the movie as it is where troops are marching and Nazi flags are hung.  The problem with that, during the shooting of the movie, was that locals were not told a movie shoot was going on.  That is one reason there is a general dislike for the movie, Sound of Music, in Austria.

This is the fountain where Maria sang a portion of "I have confidence in me".  It is much harder to splash the horse with water than Julie Andrews made it look.

Seriously the best sport ever - he's seen the movie once.
The cemetery that inspired the set built for the movie...I always thought the parts in the gated tombs were so spooky!
No part of the movie set at all - we took a break in this square and we bought pretzels from this stand.
This is the view from the hilltop where Maria's convent is located.
Maria's convent in REAL LIFE.
Totally standing behind Maria's convent gate - squeeeeeal!
This house was used for the back of the von Trapp's house.  This man-made lake was where everyone fell out of the boat in their matching curtain clothes.
Quacker Jack and the von Trapp's house
This is the scenery on our ride to another house used for the front of the von Trapp family house.
Recognize this yet?

It's the front of the von Trapp house!!!!!  Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my goodness!  It is a part of the Mozarteum University of Salzburg now.  We overheard someone practicing piano while we visited.
So exciting

The next to last stop, the gazebo used for outside shots of "I am sixteen going on seventeen".  The city keeps it locked up because too many people were getting hurt trying to dance on the benches inside the gazebo.

The final stop, Mirabel Gardens, where many scenes of "Do, Ri, Me" songs were filmed.

I can't wait to watch the movie again!

  1. It's been YEARS since I've seen it, I'm going to have to rewatch just for these scenes!
