Heidelberg, Germany

Our last stop on our driving tour:  Heidelberg, Germany:

We checked into our hotel and made our way to the Old Town for supper.

The following day, we ventured back into the Old Town to explore.
We started seeing this chalk inscription on doors in Innsbruck, Austria.  We finally remembered to Google it.
A colorful car
Postcard time at our lunch stop.

I loved this skinny little house.

Quacker Jack with the Neckar River behind him.
The gate of a pedestrian bridge crossing the Neckar River.
Heidelberg Castle is in the background on the left.

There are stalls built into the sides of the church in the center of town.  We thought this odd, but upon further investigation, found this was a tradition begun in the Middle Ages. Hmm

We climbed up a very steep hill to reach Heidelberg Castle.  This is the view from the top.

A very complicated looking sundial on the side of the castle
What's that?  Our admission includes the Pharmacy Museum?  Don't mind if we do.

These shelves and such were part of a pharmacist's shop.

These were too - the red containers on the lower right and left hand sides are from the 18th century and still contain traces of the drugs listed on the outside!

More pharmacy artifacts (note the crocodile used to indicate an apothecary)

We left the Pharmacy Museum and toured the rest of the outside of the castle.

We walked past this house on our way back into town from the castle.
Another building on our walk back to town

We set out for the Frankfurt airport the following day in order to return our rental car and catch a train to our next destination, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Schonach, Germany

Another B&B, another balcony:

We met our host, Rita, and immediately took a liking to her.  She is personable and funny - probably our favorite host of this trip!
The gorgeous night sky after dinner on our first night in Schonach:
And the beautiful sunrise the next morning

We did a little walking through the town and Black Forest.  We encountered some farm animals on our walk.

I have a new chicken coop plan: (haha)

Then we entered the shade of the trees - much cooler in there!
These are everywhere.

Quacker Jack on our hike.
I really liked all these directional signs.  Note Quacker Jack sitting on top of the bicycle sign.

Back in town, we stopped for a light lunch because our host Rita informed us there was a festival tonight complete with German food and music.  And you know we love a good festival.
We knew it was going to be a good night when we saw all the locals walking to the community center.  We arrived, found a seat, placed our order, and enjoyed being the only tourists in the mix.  Rita and her husband joined us later in the evening.  I can't tell you how much fun we had.

This is the 60th year for Herbstfest (that's Fall Fest to you and me).  Seriously such a good night!
